Howard University’s Research Institute for Tactical Autonomy (RITA) proudly congratulates Dr. Darsana Josyula, Professor of Computer Science at Bowie State University, Director of the Autonomous Technologies Laboratory and RITA principal investigator on being awarded the Wilson H. Elkins Professorship by the University System of Maryland. This appointment is one of the highest academic honors within the system, recognizing distinguished scholars who combine exceptional research with a deep commitment to teaching and community impact.

The Wilson H. Elkins Professorship was established in 1978 to honor the legacy of Dr. Wilson H. Elkins, former president of the University of Maryland. Elkins Professors are selected for their scholarly excellence, ability to inspire students, and commitment to extending their impact beyond their home institutions. Funding from the professorship supports innovative projects that contribute to both academic advancement and community engagement.

For Dr. Josyula, receiving the Elkins Professorship is more than a personal achievement. It is a reflection of the vibrant research community she has built at Bowie State.

“I think it’s a testament to all the work that has been happening in my lab. We are building something more than just machines that can do things. We are building a community of people who really want to work together and like each other.”

Her lab, which includes postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and even high school participants, thrives on collaboration and mentorship. Students frequently return after graduation to guide the next generation, creating what she describes as a “community feeling” within the Autonomous Technologies Laboratory.

Dr. Josyula has long been a leader in artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. She has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, delivered national and international keynote lectures, and directed research projects funded by the Department of Defense, Army Research Laboratory, and RITA’s UARC program.

Dr. Josyula’s recognition as an Elkins Professor affirms not only her scholarship but also her dedication to mentorship and to advancing opportunities for students in artificial intelligence and autonomy. Her appointment as an Elkins Professor ensures continued investment in the Autonomous Technologies lab, advancing research and creating new pathways for students to shape the future of autonomous systems.
