Howard University’s Research Institute for Tactical Autonomy (RITA) proudly celebrates Dr. Gloria Washington, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Lab at Howard University, for being named to EBONY Magazine’s 2025 Power 100 List in the STEM Trailblazers category.
As a Principal Investigator at RITA, Dr. Washington is recognized for her pioneering work in affective computing, biometrics, and human-centered design. Through her leadership of the Affective Biometrics Lab, she advances technology that enhances digital experiences and drives innovation in human–computer interaction. Her projects range from studying how voice-enabled systems interpret speech patterns to developing immersive tools that support decision-making in clinical and technical settings. Her research has been supported by the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, and major technology companies.
The EBONY Power 100 STEM Trailblazers highlight leaders who demonstrate why science matters, scientists and innovators who harness technology’s power to transform lives and inspire future generations. For Dr. Washington, this recognition represents both a personal milestone and a collective win for her students and community.
Dr. Washington shared in an interview with RITA, “When I heard that I made the list, I was like, oh my God. This is my proudest achievement because I didn’t think my work was recognized, but obviously it is. If anybody can look up to me, hopefully they can see themselves in that.”
At Howard and RITA, Dr. Washington is not only advancing research but also mentoring the next generation of innovators.
“The most rewarding part is working with students and conducting research that will protect our systems. I hope some of my students see me and see how it translates for their future, because they can generate whatever future they want to create.”
Dr. Washington’s work extends beyond technical breakthroughs to the social impact of technology. She is exploring deepfake voice recognition, designing systems to safeguard against nefarious uses of AI, and ensuring technology reflects cultural nuance and human emotion.
Her recognition on the EBONY Power 100 list cements her role as a trailblazer who is shaping the future of computing while inspiring others to see themselves in STEM.
